The best time to schedule junk removal in San Antonio

First, what does not change

There is no weekend surcharge, no same-day surcharge, no peak-season pricing and no holiday rate. A quarter-truck load is $241 in the last week of July and in the second week of January.

So this is not a page about finding a cheaper slot. It is about finding one that exists, and about not booking yourself into the worst four hours of a South Texas summer day.

Two things actually matter: which week of the year, and which hour of the day.

The single best window: mid-morning on a weekday

Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, first or second slot of the day.

Weekdays have more availability than Saturdays because most households want Saturdays, so the same day booked midweek is easier to get. And an early slot matters here for a reason that has nothing to do with scheduling: heat.

From late May into September, work that involves a garage, an attic hatch, a shed, a backyard or a driveway is a fundamentally different job at eight in the morning than at two in the afternoon. A closed garage on a west-facing elevation is well over 100 degrees by mid-morning. An attic over that garage is worse. Everybody works faster and safer early, including you.

If the job is entirely inside an air-conditioned house, the hour matters less. Almost none of them are.

The busy weeks in this city

San Antonio has a distinct calendar and it is worth knowing.

May through August is the heaviest period of the year. That is PCS season. Families rotating through Lackland, Fort Sam Houston, Randolph and Camp Bullis move on dates set by orders, which means rentals in Universal City, Schertz, Cibolo, Converse and out on the Southwest side all turn over in the same window. Nobody in that group can move their date.

Late April and May adds student move-out around UTSA, St. Mary's, UIW and the Alamo Colleges, concentrated in the complexes off Babcock, De Zavala and Culebra.

The last three days and first three days of any month are lease-cycle crunch everywhere.

If your job falls in any of those, book ahead. Same-day is often possible and costs nothing extra, but in the third week of June it is not something to rely on.

The quiet weeks

If you have flexibility, these are the easy ones.

• Mid-January through February. After the holidays, before spring. Also the most comfortable weather of the year for a garage clearance.
• Mid-month, any month. The 8th through the 22nd avoids the lease cycle at both ends.
• Late September and October. PCS season has finished, the heat has finally broken, and nothing else is happening.
• Early December, before the holidays proper.

February is quietly the best month in San Antonio for any job involving a garage, a shed or a yard. You can actually work out there.

Seasonal triggers worth planning around

Certain jobs cluster because of what the weather just did.

Spring hail. Storm season finishes patio furniture, glass tabletops and sling chairs in a single afternoon, and it damages outdoor units. If your set is already tired, clear it before the season rather than joining the queue after.

The first hot week. Everybody discovers at the same moment that the window unit is dead, the garage fridge stopped cooling, and the pool liner split over the winter. That week is busy.

Hard freezes. The freezes that hit Texas leave burst lines, cracked water heater tanks and dead outdoor units all at once, and the replacements get installed fast while the old units get left behind.

After Fiesta, in late April, spring cleaning properly kicks off across the city.

January. New exercise equipment arrives and the old treadmill at $115 goes.

The hours to avoid

Traffic is the other half of this, and this metro has real rush hours.

Loop 410, 281 and I-10 through the Medical Center corridor are slow both ends of the day, and 1604 is busy on the northern arc. A crew crossing the city from one side of the loop to the other in the afternoon spends time on the road that they would rather spend on your garage.

Mid-morning, roughly between the two peaks, is the sweet spot for both traffic and heat. If the truck is coming across town to reach you, that is when it arrives closest to on time.

When the deadline picks the date for you

Most jobs are not flexible, so here is how to sequence the common ones.

• Selling a house: clear before the listing photos, not after. The photos are taken once and buyers here always open the garage door.
• Moving: discard before the movers quote, because long-distance moves are priced on weight or volume. Then book the leftovers cleanout for the day after the movers, never the same day. A single-width San Antonio driveway will not take two trucks.
• PCS: discard pass the week orders land, cleanout booked two to three weeks out.
• Rental turnover: book on the key handback date, before the trades.
• Estate: sort first, then book, and give yourself a weekday so family can be present.

How far ahead to book

Rough guide for this city.

• January, February, September, October, mid-month: a day or two is usually fine, often same-day.
• Any month end: three to five days.
• May through August: a week or more, and longer if your date is fixed by a lease or by orders.
• Multi-load jobs like estates, hoarding and full house clearances: plan these regardless of season, because they run across more than one day and in summer they have to start early.

None of that changes the price. A full truck is $732 whenever it goes, and a quarter truck is $241.
