Texas’s German-Merchant District
King William takes its name from King Wilhelm I of Prussia. Ernst Hermann Altgelt built the first home around 1866, and the district became the enclave of San Antonio’s successful German merchants, with several houses designed by architect Alfred Giles. It entered the National Register of Historic Places on January 20, 1972.
The King William stretch of the River Walk and the Johnson Street footbridge tie it to downtown, and Southtown’s arts strip runs alongside. Lavaca, next door, adds smaller cottages of the same era.

Can you take a cast-iron bathtub out of an old house?
Yes. A cast-iron tub is $185; it needs an extra set of hands and careful planning on the stairs.
What about antiques someone could use?
Usable pieces are set aside for donation. If you plan to sell anything, keep it aside and we’ll leave it.
Is parking a problem on these streets?
