The City of San Antonio does collect furniture and appliances for free. The catch is how often, how much, and where you live.
City customers get two bulky collections and two brush collections a year, scheduled by area. A door hanger announces your week, and the pile has to be out by 7 a.m. that Monday.
Piles are capped at eight cubic yards and must sit near the curb. Furniture, mattresses, large appliances, water heaters, up to three TVs and up to six tires without rims are accepted.
Concrete, roofing, glass, mirrors, soil and demolition material are refused at the curb. Setting out the wrong material, or setting it out after the crew has passed, can bring a daily fine plus collection fees.
Bitters, Frio City Road, Culebra and Rigsby take up to four cubic yards of bulky items and one cubic yard of construction debris from residents with ID and a CPS Energy bill. Commercial haulers are turned away.
Enclave cities such as Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills and Leon Valley run their own collection, and unincorporated areas like Alamo Ranch and Timberwood Park sit outside the City’s program. If your pile fits the City’s rules and your door hanger is coming soon, use it. For everything else — the weeks in between, items still inside, construction debris, or an address the program doesn’t reach — we carry it out on a day you pick.
Texas treats garbage and rubbish removal as a taxable real property service (Tax Code §151.0101; 34 TAC §3.356), so junk removal here carries sales tax on the full charge. Every hauler in the state is under the same rule.
Usable furniture is set aside for donation, appliances go to refrigerant recovery and metal recycling, and the rest goes to commercial landfills — the City’s drop-off centers don’t accept hauler loads.
Waste Management’s Covel Gardens landfill on the southwest side and Republic’s Tessman Road landfill on the east side keep hauls short from almost anywhere in Bexar County.
