The short answer
Choose by whether you want to do the loading.
Rent a dumpster if the work is ongoing, if the debris will be generated over several days, and if you or a crew are the ones throwing it in. Demolition and renovation are the classic fits.
Book junk removal if the stuff already exists and somebody needs to carry it out of the house. Cleanouts, move-outs, garages, estates and single heavy items.

What a roll-off actually involves
Beyond the rental rate, which varies by size and by how long you keep it, there are four costs people forget.
- The loading. All of it, by you. That is the part junk removal is actually selling.
- Weight limits. Roll-offs come with a tonnage allowance and overage is billed on top. Heavy debris eats it fast, and tile, plaster, concrete and roofing are all heavier than they look.
- Prohibited items. Paint, solvents, chemicals, tires, batteries, propane cylinders, electronics and refrigerant appliances are excluded from roll-offs the same as from curbside collection. You still have to deal with those separately.
- Rental days. The clock runs whether you are working or not, and it runs over the weekend when it rains.

The permit question

Realistically, that means you get two workable hours in the morning before the driveway is unbearable and the container itself is hot enough to burn a forearm on. A project you thought would take a weekend takes three, and the rental clock keeps running.
Junk removal compresses the same job into a single visit with a crew who are equipped for it. That is not a small difference in July.
Where the dumpster genuinely wins
Be fair to it. There are jobs where a container is the right answer.
- A multi-day renovation where debris appears continuously and a crew is on site anyway.

- A full gut, where the volume is large, the material is uniform, and there is nowhere to stage it.
- Anything where you have free labor and a deadline measured in days rather than hours.

For a renovation, the efficient answer is often both.
Use a container for the ongoing demolition debris that your contractor is generating anyway, and book a separate junk removal visit for the heavy awkward items that would eat the container's weight allowance and that nobody wants to lift over a four-foot wall.
