Who actually picks up old appliances in San Antonio

The short answer

Your options, in order of cheapest to easiest:

• The delivery crew bringing your new unit. Cheapest, but only on delivery day.
• Scrap haulers. Free, curbside only, metal only, and no refrigerators.
• The city's bulky-waste window. Free, but on a fixed schedule and with rules about what qualifies.
• Your electric utility's current programs. Worth checking, terms change year to year.
• Flat-price pickup. $164 for a refrigerator, $133 a washer, $128 a dryer, carried out from wherever it is.

The question that sorts them is simple: can you get the appliance to the curb by yourself? If yes, you have four options. If it is in a garage, a utility closet or a second-floor unit, you have one.

The delivery crew

Retailers across the metro will haul the old unit when they deliver the new one, usually for a modest fee at purchase. Take it every time. The crew is already there, already has the dolly, and the truck is already going.

What breaks it: the old unit still works, so it gets rolled into the garage as a spare instead. Then the garage does what San Antonio garages do to appliances over three summers past 100 degrees, and by the time it dies the delivery crew is long gone.

It also breaks if the old unit is not disconnected when they arrive. Crews generally will not shut off a gas line or a water supply for you.

Scrap haulers, and the fridge problem

Independent metal haulers work this city hard, and a washer, dryer, water heater or range at the curb will often disappear within a day of being listed for free.

Two hard limits. They do not come inside. If it is in the garage or down a hallway, that is your carry, and a full water heater or a top-load washer on a slab is a two-person job. And they will not take refrigerators, freezers, window AC units or outdoor condensers, because all of those contain refrigerant that has to be recovered by a certified technician before the unit can be processed. That is a federal requirement, not a preference.

So the scrap route works well on exactly the appliances that were easy anyway, and not at all on the fridge that has been in your garage since 2019.

The city's bulky window

The city collects bulky items on a published schedule tied to your address. Look up your street on your city's solid waste page and read the current rules, because appliances often have their own conditions attached.

Where it fails in practice: the timing. A fridge that dies in July does not wait patiently for a window months away, and a dead fridge sitting in a garage through a San Antonio summer becomes a smell problem within days. Apartment residents mostly cannot use this route at all, since complex dumpster enclosures are posted against bulky items.

If your window is next week and you can get the unit to the curb, use it.

Utility programs

Electric utilities sometimes run appliance recycling or efficiency incentives, and terms change from one year to the next. Check what your utility is currently offering rather than acting on something you read a few years back.

When these programs run, they typically target working but inefficient second refrigerators and freezers, which describes an enormous share of San Antonio garages. It is a five-minute check and worth doing before you pay anyone.

Flat-price pickup, and what it covers

This is the route for anything that is not already at the curb.

Carry-out from the garage, the utility closet or a second-floor apartment is included, along with the disposal and the refrigerant handling. No stair charge, no walk-up fee, no same-day surcharge. Minimum visit $75.

Where San Antonio appliances actually live

Knowing this tells you which route is open to you.

In the garage. A huge share of the metro's ranch housing has the laundry pair in the attached two-car garage, and a second fridge or a chest freezer beside it. Easy access for a truck, impossible for a curbside-only hauler unless you move it.

In a utility closet. Newer builds in Alamo Ranch, Cibolo and the far North side put a stacked unit in a closet off the hall, often upstairs. That is a stair carry, and a stacked combo is a single awkward object at $189.

In an apartment kitchen. Garden-style complexes off De Zavala, Babcock and Perrin Beitel mean an exterior stair run for anything that leaves.

On the side of the house. The dead outdoor condenser unit after a replacement, $115.

Doing more than one at once

Because of the $75 minimum, one visit beats two.

Laundry pair: washer $133 + dryer $128 = $261. A quarter-truck load is $241, so the volume price wins.

Garage clearout with the second fridge: refrigerator $164 + chest freezer $146 = $310, against $338 for a 3/8 load. Items win.

Kitchen and laundry: refrigerator $164 + washer $133 + dryer $128 = $425, against a half truck at $431. Items win by $6.
