What hot tub removal costs in San Antonio

So it sits. The cover sags, then it collects water, then it splits. Algae gets in. The pump seals dry out in the heat. Someone turns it off to save on the power bill and then it is off for good.

By the time people call, the typical San Antonio hot tub has been out of service for two or three years, is full of stagnant water, and is sitting on a slab patio behind a six-foot privacy fence. All three of those are normal and all three are handled.

Drain it first

A full hot tub holds hundreds of gallons and it is not moving until that is out. Do this a day or two ahead, not on the morning.

Use the drain valve, and if that has seized, which it often has, a submersible pump moves it faster. Where the water goes matters: chemically treated water should not go straight into a storm drain, and given how fast the creek drainages in this city move after a storm, that is not a hypothetical. Check the current guidance from your water utility on discharging pool and spa water before you open the valve.

If the tub has been sitting open for a couple of seasons, expect the remaining water to be unpleasant and full of mosquito larvae. Stagnant standing water in a San Antonio backyard becomes a mosquito problem within days, which is its own reason not to leave the thing sitting.

The electrical disconnect

A hot tub is usually on a dedicated 240-volt circuit through a GFCI disconnect box mounted on the wall near the unit. That has to be shut off at the breaker and disconnected properly, and that is an electrician's job, not a junk removal crew's.

Get it done before the day. It takes a licensed electrician very little time, and it means the crew arrives to a safe, dead unit and the job is quick.

The disconnect box and the conduit stay unless your electrician removes them. Plug-in 120-volt models are simpler: unplug, and you are done.

The gate is the real variable

Measure it this week, not on the day.

A typical hard-shell hot tub is six to eight feet across. A standard residential side gate is nowhere near that, which is why the tub almost always comes out in pieces rather than whole. That breakdown is part of the $322.

And do not wait for a season that suits it. There is no winter reprieve here, no freeze-and-crack deadline forcing your hand, so a dead tub will happily sit for another three years. The costs of waiting are a mosquito breeding site, a sagging cover, and a patio you cannot use. The price is the same today as it will be in three years, so there is nothing to gain.
