Why patio sets die faster here
Direct South Texas sun, for five months a year, on a slab that radiates heat back up into the underside of everything.
What actually fails, in order:
- Cushions. First season, color goes. Second season, the foam inside compacts and the fabric starts to powder when you rub it.
- Resin and plastic. UV makes it brittle. It does not bend any more, it cracks, usually at a leg joint, usually with somebody sitting on it.
- Sling fabric. The weave goes chalky and then splits along the rail.
- Powder-coated steel and aluminum. Coating chalks and lifts, then the frame rusts from the base up where water pools on the slab after a storm.
- Tempered glass tabletops. Thermal cycling plus a hailstorm and it goes all at once into a million pebbles.
Wooden sets do better if they are oiled, and almost nobody oils them.
The covered-patio illusion
People assume a covered patio protects the furniture. It helps with direct overhead sun and it does nothing about the rest.
Heat still cooks the foam. Reflected light off a light-colored slab still bleaches fabric from underneath. And the west-facing hour, which in this city is the hour that does the damage, comes in sideways under any cover you have.
The same goes for storing the set in the garage over winter, which a lot of households here do out of habit brought from somewhere colder. A San Antonio garage in August is hotter than the patio was. Storing cushions in there does not preserve them, it finishes them.
What to do before you pay to remove it
A couple of pieces are worth rescuing and it takes ten minutes to work out which.
Sell it if the frame is solid cast aluminum or teak and only the cushions have failed. Those frames hold value and people will recushion them. Late spring is the window, when everyone is setting up for summer.
Give it away if it is functional but tired. Set it in the driveway, post it, and it usually goes the same day. Do not leave it out overnight in a summer storm.
Do not bother with brittle resin, split slings, rusted tube frames or a table with a cracked glass top. Nobody wants those, and a cracked tempered top is genuinely hazardous to move around.

The grill, and the cylinder
The grill usually goes at the same time as the set, because the same summer that killed the chairs rusted the grill's burner tubes out.
A charcoal grill is $59 and a propane grill is $71. The one extra step is the propane cylinder. Cylinders do not go on a general load under any circumstances. Timing it around the seasons
There are two right moments in San Antonio and one wrong one.
Late winter into early spring is the best. You have just decided the set is finished, the weather is workable, and you can replace it before the season starts rather than spending another summer on cracked chairs.
After a hail storm. Spring hail is the single most common way a patio set goes from tired to done in one afternoon, particularly glass tops and sling seats. If the set is being replaced through insurance anyway, get the old one out before the new one arrives.
